“A ‘sound keeper’ is someone who puts sound under safe keeping, and in Chinese, the character for “keeping” (sau2)  puns with the character for ‘seeking’, ‘hunting’, or ‘collecting’ (sau2). In this project, we try to find out how sound keepers and sound seekers relate themselves to sound with materials in The Library by soundpocket.

This project categorizes sounds into ‘sound wave’, ‘music’ and ‘language’. ‘Sound wave’ refers to sound that is represented by the language of physics; it is without emotions and subjective meaning, like a Mathematical formula. ‘Music’ or simply sound is sound without the content of language, but it can influence human emotions, like instrumental music and sighs. ‘Language’ is communication through sound; it has the most complicated structure of sound among the three. It not only carries meaning, but it is also a system of thinking.

We take two opposite extremes for each category as two gravitational poles – “not listen<>listen”, “unpleasant to listen<>pleasant to listen”, “do not understand<>understand”. We look for someone of each extreme in the way they deal with sound in daily life. These are our Sound Keepers. From a hearing-impaired person, a Zen master, a rocker, an air conditioning technician, an insurance agent to a hypnotherapist etc., they will participate in a series of experiments for The Library.”

On 21^st January, Pak comes into conversation with Chow Yiu-fai and Solomon Yu Tik-man, also guest curators of Guest Curation Project by The Library by soundpocket. The conversation will be live-streamed and broadcasted*. A phone-in session will also be featured, during which the public, after listening to and browsing the Online Exhibition, are free to leave messages at the Facebook event page of “The Library by soundpocket” or call the curators directly to interact with them.

「守音人」是把聲音守住的人，其同音字「搜音人」是指搜集聲音的人，在這個項目我們嘗試通過聲音圖書館來找出「他們」和聲音的關係。我們把聲音拆分成三部份：聲波／音樂／語言。「聲波」只從物理角度去理解聲音，完全抽離感情和主觀的意思，像一條數學公式；「音樂」或純聲音是沒有語言內容的聲音，但能影響人的情緒，如純音樂和嘆息；「語言」通過聲音來溝通，是聲音的最複雜結構，它本身除了是意思的載體，也是一種思考系統。我們在每一個範圍各找兩個極端，作為引力：「聽不見＜＞聽見」／「不好聽＜＞好聽」／「不明白＜＞明白」。我們為每個「極端」尋找一名化身，他們在日常處境中從事和聲音有關職業的人，他們就是「守音人」。由聽障人士、禪師、搖滾樂手、冷氣機技工、保險經紀到催眠師等等，他們會為聲音圖書館做一系列聆聽的實驗。

於1月21日當晚，白雙全將會連同聲音圖書館客席策展計劃的另外兩位策展人 – 周耀輝及余廸文，與公衆來一次深宵網上直播節目*。届時白雙全除了會談及《守音人》，三位客席策展人更會互相分享其創作經驗。節目更設烽煙時段，歡迎公衆在聆聽及閲覽網上展覽後在聲音圖書館（ “The Library by soundpocket” ）Facebook活動專頁留言或打電話，即時與策展人交流對談。

About Pak Sheung-chuen

Pak Sheung-chuen was born in 1977 in Fujian (China) and immigrated to Hong Kong in 1984. He obtained his B.A. degree in Fine Arts (minor in Theology) from Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2002. Being one of the most promising conceptual and performance artists working today, Pak’s practice in photography, drawing and conceptual art, often deals with and reflects upon the contradicting absurdness and ordinariness of everyday life in a poetic and humorous nature. He likes comics by Feng Zikai（豐子愷）, songs by Danny Chan（陳百強）and travelling. His works was published almost weekly in Ming Pao from 2003 to 2007. His publications include Odd One In Ⅱ – Invisible Travel, Odd One In: Hong Kong Diary and See Walk What on 1 July. Pak was awarded the Overseas Exchange Prize (Chinese Performance Art) by the Macao Museum of Art in 2005 and 2008 respectively. In 2012, he got the Best Artist Award in the Chinese Contemporary Art Awards (CCAA) and the Best Artist Award in Hong Kong by the HKADC.

“Guest Curation” is The Library ’s long-term project inaugurated in 2014. Artist/curator Solomon Yu, lyrics’ writer Chow Yiu-fai, and artist Pak Sheung-chuen, are invited to take an active role in interpreting the existing materials in The Library. Their concept and curation become mini-websites that could be accessed from The Library.

白雙全 1977 年生於中國福建，1984 年移居香港。2002 年畢業於香港中文大學藝術系，副修神學。從事攝影、繪畫及概念藝術創作,作品關於人與人與城市和自然之間的感通。喜歡豐子愷的漫畫，陳百強的歌，喜歡旅行。他的作品多發表於星期日《明報》的專欄(2003-2007)。他曾出版《單身看 II：與視覺無關的旅行》、《單身看：香港生活雜記》和《七一孖你遊香港》。2005 年及 2008 年他獲澳門藝術博物館頒發「行為藝術獎」；2012 年獲得中國當代藝術獎(CCAA)的最佳藝術家獎及香港藝術發展局頒發年度香港最佳藝術家獎。
