Thanks for the invitation by Mr. Lee Chi Ho, we held two listening workshops with F.4 to F.6 students of The Salvation Army Shek Wu School. Through the listening exercises, we raised the question about sound, listening, yourself and the relation with the society, thus to encourage students to become an active listener, also be active to create.

In the first session, we turned the daily mundane materials into “sound objects”, for instance, rubber band, plastic fork, file holder, water, paper, glass bottle, metal box, drainer etc of different combination. Some students took the role as “performer” and some took the roles as “conductor”, together with some beats, students jammed an improvised ensemble.

After the students made the sound map in the second session, they compared and realised each of them could have different interpretation of the same sound, it is very subjective and unique. Take a look for the following students to see 3 different ways of expressing cicada’s sound: (see above soundmaps)

Finally, 60 students picked an impressive sound they heard in the campus, and mimicking this sound together to reconstruct the soundscape of “early summer afternoon of The Salvation Army Shek Wu School”. (ooops, why so many weird and noisy creature had come out!)

There are many ways to record sound,  mimicking sound, reinterpret sound with a group is also a way to record and create.

“What sound makes you scared?” A little boy said, “Tiger!” “How does that sound like?” He said, “I have never seen tiger, nor heard their voice.“ This little boy reminds us that whether we have taken the daily listening perception way too granted?

Invited by Ms CHUNG Siu-Mui, The Library by soundpocket joined Tai Po Youth Art Festival 2015, and held an Itchy Ear Listening workshop. The workshop attracted elderly, kids and parents, couples and teenagers to participate and use the ears, headphones and drawings to explore listening and sound. Age doesn’t avoid the participants to interact, the surprise from sounds encouraged them to share and ask questions among themselves.

Tai Po Youth Arts Festival 2015 is organized by Tai Po Home Affairs Department and Tai Po District Youth Network, and held at Tai Po Civic Centre and the former Tai Po Government Secondary School from March 27th to 28th, 2015.

Thanks for the invitation by Ms Liu Chor-wa, we held a listening workshop with S.K.H. Leung Kwai Yee Secondary School’s Form 4 students on 4th and 11th Mar 2015. This listening experience was part of the Life Education programme. Through the listening exercises, we hope to encourage the students to open a perception to explore the surrounding, and take listening as a way of knowing ourselves and each other.

And each of us chose a favorite sound, feeling a bit shy, we reconstructed the soundscape of 28 Hiu Ming Street in a Wednesday afternoon.
