Event Review : “Outing: wandering and listening” @Hung Lung Hang, Sheung Shui

On the afternoon of Feb 18, it was a beautiful sunny day. After we all gathered at the bus terminal in the bustling town we took a bus which brought us to the area adjacent to the border between Hong Kong and China. As the passengers got off the bus and when there were fewer passengers, the bus engine sound became louder and louder. We got off at Sandy Ridge bus stop on Man Kam To Road. There was an open ground. We got prepared and started our journey walking up the mountain. When we walked through the village of Sha Ling, there were birds humming, insects buzzing, dogs barking, wind whistling and people chatting. Different sounds were colliding and reverberating through the houses along the pathway, and we could feel the harmony of the echoes.

The village pathway jointed a road with heavy traffic. There were fallen leaves, rubbles and all kinds of junk items along the way towards the mountain. As we were getting closer to Hung Lung Hang, the sounds became more extensive, as if there was water evaporating from a bottle, crossing the rim and diffusing into the air. We sat on a burnt land with green shoots sprouting up, listened to the sounds coming from the valley, looked at the scenery beyond the border of Hong Kong, shared with each other our listening experience and feelings during the walk and the sounds and texts we collected during “Open call for submissions: imagining boundaries”. After that, we returned to the starting point of the journey. There were sounds with different textures in the surrounding along the way down the slope.
